In the beginning….

“In the beginning, the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.” —Douglas Adams, “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.”

Yassss, honey. I’m a Douglas Adams fan. How could I (or anyone) possibly resist a man who so simply enumerated the meaning of life, the universe, and everything (42, of course)? A writer whose irresistible quotes will outlive him for decades to come (“He was a dreamer, a thinker, a speculative philosopher… or, as his wife would have it, an idiot.”)? The guy who so aptly stated, “There’s nothing worse than sitting down to write a novel and saying, “Well, okay, I’m going to do something of high artistic worth”?

That last one is really where this blog begins.

Douglas Adams, Jack Kerouac, Tom Robbins…these guys all inspired me to want to spend my life as a writer. They all approached their writing with abandon, but without rules. Sometimes, their experiments worked. Often, they failed. But they all started with the one goal—not to create something of high artistic worth, but rather to express themselves in a way that was uniquely, authentically their own.

I have a lot to say. Most of it will probably have little worth, artistic or otherwise. But it’s my blog, so I’m just going to say it anyway.

Raising a glass to you, wherever you are, D.A.

Best,
Brianna
